Plenty Of Options Open To Leaving Cert Students

On the week that the CAO offers have been published, my advice to students would be don’t panic. First of all there will be second round offers too in the next couple of weeks and I note that there are some courses where the points entry level has gone up which indicates an increased demand. However there are some courses where apprenticeships could be the pathway to a career. For example in Germany, to qualify to be a dental nurse you can do an apprenticeship course rather than go through the college system. Insurance companies are also looking at an apprenticeships and I would favour that approach as an alterative way of getting onto the careers ladder for some students. I would also advise students to talk to teachers and guidance counsellors as there is plenty of advice out there. A lot of students leave a course during their first year because it doesn’t suit them, so more thought should be put into the choice. Maybe there is a role there in transition year to show students what is involved in the various third level courses that they might be interested in doing
