It is with great shock and sadness that the entire country has learned this morning that a Garda lost his life last night while in the line of duty in Co. Roscommon, according to independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice.

He said: “I wish to extend my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the Garda who sadly passed away following last night’s shooting in Castlerea.

“This is a reminder of the dangers which Gardai face in the line of duty while upholding law and order.

“Last night’s shooting brings back memories of the deaths of Detective Garda John Morley and Garda Henry Byrne almost 40 years ago near Loughglynn.

“Knowing the community of Castlerea, they will rally around the Gardai in the area who have tragically lost their colleague.

“May he rest in peace,” he concluded.
